Tango in the Skies
Sterna sumatrana
Two Black-naped Terns clash mid-air, making contact with their beaks and forming a satisfying symmetrical circular formation. Their pure white feathers blend in with the overcast sky, and their bright red mouths create a slight pop of colour in an otherwise monochromatic photo. During the mating season, Black-naped Terns indulge in aerial displays with their partners. Thinking of trying a different perspective, I decided to photograph it from a bottom-up angle, contrary to the eye-level wildlife photography rule of thumb. The neck strain paid off, as I got a unique symmetrical photo of the aerial courtship in the air, which can only be achieved with the bottom-up shooting angle!
